Years ago I moved to Woodland Hills to take a job in a small hospital’s emergency department. No one wanted to work on Christmas Eve, so the shift(輪班)went to me. I kissed my family goodbye and went off to spend the night in the hospital. It was a thankless job.

At 9 pm, the ambulance brought in a man in his 60s who was having a heart attack. His face was pale, and he was frightened. The whole night I did my best to save his life. Before I left in the morning to spend Christmas with my family, I stopped by to see how he was doing. It was still tough, but he had survived the night and was sleeping.

The following year I got Christmas Eve duty again. At 9 pm sharp, the ward clerk told me there was a couple who wanted to speak with me. When I approached them, the man introduced himself as Mr. Lee and said, “You probably don’t remember me, but last Christmas Eve you saved my life. Thank you for the year you gave me.” He and his wife hugged me, handed me a small gift, and left.

The following year a new doctor had joined the group, but I wanted to see if Mr. and Mrs. Lee would return. This time, I volunteered for the shift. I kept an eye on the door. Once again, at exactly 9 pm, the Lees appeared, carrying a warmly wrapped bundle. It was their new grandchild. Mr. Lee, his family and I spent 13 Christmas Eves together.

The last year I saw him, he brought me a gift. I carefully opened the package and found a crystal bell inside. It was carved with a single word: Friendship. Now, my family, friends and I ring that bell every Christmas Eve at exactly 9 pm and offer our best wishes to the man who we won’t forget.

World Book Day is a celebration of all things wonderful about books for all ages, with author events, school fancy-dress parades(遊行)and a £1 book token(購書券)given to all school children under 18. Adele Geras’s moving story Out In The Dark was set in World War I, in which young Rob came back from the battlefields. Determined to find the officer’s widow to return the photo of her and their daughter that the captain kept with him, he traveled several thousand miles but never gave up.

Dead Man Talking is a fantastic tale of Pat, who had a terrible fight with his best friend, Joe, ten years ago -- but now hears that Joe is dead, and he must attend his funeral. But Joe is not going quietly that very night -- he’s lying in his coffin being very chatty indeed.

The United States Capitol Dome in Washington, DC, is recognized around the world as a symbol of the U.S. government. Since last November, the dome has been surrounded by metal poles, or scaffolding(腳手架), and heavy cloth as part of a repair project.

The last major repair work on the U.S. Capitol took place in 1960. Since then, the dome has become weathered and worn. The Architect of the Capitol group reports the dome has more than 1,000 narrow breaks on its surface and other damage.

The dome was completed around 1863. U.S. Senate Historian Don Ritchie says the dome’s cast iron frame is at special risk of weathering. “The capitol dome, being cast iron, has been hit by lightning countless times. And so the current construction is to repair the leaks, to fill the cracks, to take off excess(多餘的)layers of paint.”

Workers are removing old paint. They covered a large part of the building in plastic and a special cloth to protect workers from the wind and other elements. Much of the work is done at night, when lawmakers are not in the building.

Some recent visitors to the Capitol were unhappy about its current appearance. They had hoped to get a picture of the usually shining dome. Joyce said, “It was dramatic, and very fantastic, and all white, but when I come here today, it is under construction so my family cannot see it clearly, it is kind of a disappointment.”

Others were more understanding of the repairs. Rick Jones, another visitor, said, “It’s a little inconvenient for us not to see the dome but you have to think about the future and the people will be coming to this place for centuries ... and you know, there just needs to be preventive maintenance. I am not upset with that at all.”

The project is expected to take more than two years to complete. The dome should be ready for the inauguration of a new president in January 2017.

32. We can learn from the passage that the United States Capitol Dome is ______.

W: I went back to my hometown too. But I didn’t visit my friends. I visited my relatives.

W. If you buy a new one, it appears to be more expensive, but it saves more fuel in the long run.

Text 4:

W: What’s the best way to downtown?

M: If you’re in a hurry, you should take a taxi. But it’s kind of expensive. If not, take a bus then. It will cost you only about $5.

W: The latter one cannot be a better idea.

Text 5:

W: What’s the price of the apples?

M: Ten yuan per kilo for the bigger ones and six yuan per kilo for the smaller ones.

W: I’d like two kilos of bigger ones. Here is the money.

M: OK. Here are your apples.

M: Mom, I’m back.

W: Hi, Sam. You go home from school early today.

M: Yeah, our teachers will have a meeting so we all go home early.

W: Well, now that you are here, you can help me with dinner. I need those potatoes peeled and cut.

M: Mom, give me a break. Allan’s coming over to help me with my math final.

W: Well, in that case, you can do the dishes and clean up after dinner.

M: When does the flight leave?

W: At 11:30 am. By the way, it also makes a refueling stop at Chicago?

W: Less than half an hour.

M: And how long do I have to stay in Tokyo for the connecting flight?

W: Five dollars? Until when? How are you going to pay me back?

M: Come on. If I had a job, I’d lend you five dollars without asking any questions.

W: But you don’t have a job, do you?

M: I’m looking for one. I go to the employment office every day.

W: Why don’t you just go back home?

M: If I went home, I’d have to work on my father’s farm.

M: Never mind. Any particular features?

W: Pardon?

M: Any marks on it that make it stand out?

W: Only the brand name.

M: And where’s that?

W: It’s on the back… at the bottom in the left-hand corner. It’s Sagi. Oh, there’s a scratch… it’s quite bad but small…directly above the brand name. I did it recently putting it onto my bike.

M: Right, got that. So, what did you have inside the briefcase?

W: The money, my house keys, mobile phone and all my papers from college. It makes me so sad, but thank goodness for the computer, I haven’t lost the information of the papers!

Text 10:

Long ago, rain boots usually came in black or dull green. Farmers wore them. But now shops are selling them in every color and with beautiful decorations. That’s because the rain boot has been fashionable since around 2004.

But the rain boot has been fashion forward before. It began in 1817 when the Duke of Wellington started wearing a narrower, simpler boot. Being a famous war hero, men were quick to copy his style and the boot soon became a fashion. It went out of fashion at the end of the 19th century, but farmers, workers, dog walkers carried on wearing them.

So why have they become fashionable again? It’s part of the general trend for big boots: biker boots and cowboy boots are popular. But surely it’s a class thing too. The British upper classes like going outdoors – often seen with waterproof coats, dogs and rain boots.

One shoe company has reported sales of the boots up 673% this year – they’re selling 15 pairs of boots a minute. However, now everyone has them. They’re not special any more and sales will definitely fall.

Dear Amy,

It is 2016 and we’ll start new chapters in our lives. In the coming year, I’ll try harder to make my way into a great university and a bright future, planning to recite more words and passages before bedtime, doing more exercises in my spare time and asking more questions in and out of classes. Most importantly, I’ll learn from my own mistakes to become more qualified.

Even though I have loads of schoolwork to do, I’ll spend some free time having sports so that I can keep fit and energetic. In addition, I’ll give my classmates a smile, offer them a hug and share my methods to reduce the pressure on them whenever possible. We’ll go hand in hand to realize our dreams.

What’s your New Year’s plan? Looking forward to your reply.

Yours,

Li Hua
