十分著名的話
在生活中説“再見”的機會跟説“你好”一樣多——這個不幸的事實曾被塞纓爾·泰勒·科爾裏奇概括道：“相遇、結識、戀愛——然後又分離，在許多人心中留下憂傷的記憶。”
既然已決定要説“再見”，問題在於如何把這句道別的話説得恰如其分。英國大詩人拜倫曾寫道：“當永別人世時，所有告別話會一湧而出。”
羅伯特·伯恩斯的《向南希告別》是所有辭別詩中最負盛名的，因為它包括了最典型的告別要素——不乞求愛情，失望，希冀，美好的祝願等等。這首詩的結尾這樣説道：“永遠別提我們曾纏綿相愛，永遠不談我們曾盲目相愛!要麼永不相遇，要麼永不分開，我們決不會肝腸寸斷……”在查爾斯·狄更斯的小説《雙城記》中，卡頓在他上斷頭台之前，曾説過一番在文學修辭上措詞極佳、意味深長的告別話：“我要去做一件從來沒做過的非常非常好的事，我將去享受一次我從未享受過的十分十分安逸的休息……”
最令人心碎的道別話要數莎士比亞的《羅密歐與朱麗葉》一劇中，羅密歐所説的一段台詞：“晚安，再見!分別竟是這樣一種甜蜜的悲哀，我要念叨着‘晚安、再見’……，一直到明天。”
政治性的告別話又當別論。英國前首相温斯頓·邱吉爾，在談到他在英國首次公民投票選舉中獲勝的感受時，説：“1940年5月10日那天晚上，在這場權力之戰剛開始時，我便掌握了國家大權。此後5年零3個月的世界大戰中。我運用這個權力為國家辦了許多事。當我就職期滿時，我們的敵人無條件投降了。由於英國選民們要求進一步管理國家大事，我隨即離職。”此後又過了好些年，邱吉爾對死神笑臉相迎：“我已做好去見上帝的準備。至於上帝是否想在召見我之前還要磨鍊一下我，那是另外一回事。”
在一個人要死的時候，主觀意識上會出現一些意味深長或荒謬可笑的預感。當然如果沒有必要或是出於無奈，我們當中很少有人自願跨過生死界限。而且很多人都是先留下訣別的話，然後才嚥下最後一口氣。英國大作家肖伯納是個現實主義者，他臨死前對護士説：“小妹妹，你盡心竭力要讓我活在世上，正如保存一件老古董一樣。但是我已不中用了，生命即將結束，我正走向死亡。”有一位運氣不佳的南極探險隊員勞倫斯·奧茨，在冰天雪地中患了嚴重的凍傷和低氣壓症，為了使自己不成為其他人的拖累，他訣定犧牲自己。在他走出營地帳篷時説道：“我打算出去一下。”但他一去不復返。美國最有名的刑場訣別詞，要算民族英雄內森·黑爾所講的那段話：“我唯一感到遺憾的是，我只有一次生命獻給我的祖國。”
有許多軍人臨死時很少發表長篇大論或者為後人留下遺囑。美國著名的“石牆”將軍傑克遜在陣亡時對他的隨從説：“讓我們渡過這條河，坐在對岸的樹蔭下。”1890年印度首相剋勞福特在加拿大卡加立市附近逝世時，最後留下的話是：“隔不了多久，我就要走了，究竟上哪兒我也無法説。反正我們從哪兒來就得回哪兒去。生活是什麼?它是夜間螢火蟲的閃光，是冬日水牛的喘息。它像那小小的幻影飛奔過草地，然後消失在落日的餘暉裏……”。
