英語作文 篇1

This chapter is about how to move past using simple basic sentences into using compound sentences. When sentences are combined they give a natural flow and rhythm to your writing that using all short sentences doesn't create.

Compound sentences are created through coordination. Coordination is taking two or more independent clauses and putting them into the same sentence using either a conjunction or a semicolon or both.

The most important element to making coordinated sentences is to be certain that you are joining two independent clauses instead of clauses and phrases. In addition to studying the conjunctions, you will also study the punctuation patterns for compound sentences. This chapter will cover three different methods for combining sentences: using a coordinating conjunction, using a conjunctive adverb, or using just a semicolon. By the time you have completed this chapter you should be able to write sentences that varying in length so that your writing has a more flowing style.

英語作文 篇2

A cracked smartphone screen's no good. But future phones may be sold with cracks built in—because a network of tiny cracks can actually toughen up a piece of glass.

The crack research team borrowed the concept from mother-of-pearl, the iridescent stuff in abalone shells. It's 3000 times stronger than the mineral it's made of, due to its jigsawlike construction.

Using a 3-D laser engraver—the tool used to make those glass trophies with a logo floating inside—the researchers carved cracks a few microns wide into glass slides, and filled the cracks with polyurethane. The resulting glass was 200 times tougher, because the microcracks dissipate energy, preventing larger cracks. The study is in the journal Nature Communications. [M. Mirkhalaf, A. Khayer Dastjerdi and F. Barthelat, Overcoming the brittleness of glass through bio-inspiration and micro-architecture]

The cracks in this study are visible—so, not suitable for a smartphone screen. But the researchers say it's possible to shrink them down to less than a micron wide, an imperceptible size. As to whether crack-proof screens are a good business model, well, how much are you willing to shell out for an unbreakable phone?

In the past 20 years China has experienced an alarming increase in teenage smoking: the number of boys who smoked rose from 6 percent in 1980 to 23 percent in 20xx, and during the same years, the number of girls who smoked increased as much as 15 times. The statistics look quite disturbing and cause people to ask why.

The factors for a great rise in teenage smoking are complex. Some attribute it to the increased standard of living which enables kids to have more pocket money, and others place the blame on cigarette advertising and the import of cigarettes, which give them easy access to Marlboros. Whatever the causes, only particular external circumstances have been examined. The factors, actually, are psychological as well as social. Most young people begin to smoke just out of curiosity: they have a strong desire to experience the pleasure of smoking which is forbidden to them. They also have a subconscious feeling that smoking will make them mature and tough and sophisticated. When they light up a cigarette, and produce puffs of smoke carelessly, they are under the illusion that they are growns-up instead of kids and that they are admired rather than rejected by society.

To help them get rid of such foolish ideas is the first step towards the effort to prevent children from starting to smoke, and then we may conduct a more extensive campaign to make them aware of the dreadful consequences of taking up the habit.
