Since I go to high school, I am so excited about English class, because we have a foreign teacher, whose name is Paul. Paul likes to share funny things about how foreigners think about China. The way he talks makes us laugh out loudly. I learn that a lot of foreigners misunderstand our culture. Before they come to China, all they learn about this big country is from media. The media always report the negative sides, such as woman has low status, and Chinese people eat all kinds of animals. When they come to China, what they see is very different. This country is not that poor and people here are very friendly. Foreign people misunderstand our culture, and this situation happens all the time. Of course, we also will misread their culture. It is important to have real communication, so as to get further understanding.

my grandfather died about three years ago. but his behaviour①,his spirit and his care for me, are still in my mind.

my grandfather was a doctor. he had many good ways to treat diseases. he worked with a strong sense of responsibility②. one day, grandpa had a high fever, groaning③ in bed. but when he learned a patient needed treating, he got up with great difficulty and began to eamine the patient carefully. when we saw sweat drop down fromhis forehead, our eyes were full of tears.

my grandfather not only worked hard, but also took good care of me. when i was very young, i lived with him. every time i got good marks, a big smile would appear on his face. if i met with some difficulty, he would say,“don't lose heart, iao you. try your best. i'm sure you will succeed. encouraged by his words, i kept making progress in my studies. i loved him and respected him too.

one day, grandfather was taken to hospital because of a serious illness. he didn't allow mum to take me to see him until the day before his death. but when i got there, he could hardly open his mouth. he only stared at me. after some time he said with great difficulty,“be…a good…person.”these were the last words that he had said to me. i nodded in tears.

the net day, he died. i can't see him any more. dear grandpa, i will remember your words and be a good person.

it is certain for we human beings to be proud of our brilliant civilization, which offers us the comfortable life. our civilization wouldn’t develop so rapidly without the endless stream of great scientific achievements. it is electricity that plays an important role and stands out among these achievements. and we should be grateful to the scientists who had found the way to produce electricity.

in 1831,faraday, an ecellent scientist from england, summed up a law which is called faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. this law tells us how to induct electric current with magnets, faraday’ law made the book of our history turned to anew page, the age of electricity

the law belongs to the foundation of the theory of electromagnetics. the scientist worked in this field for a long time and then brought us today’s life: e-life. it is now easy to find a telephone or a light. computers also become more and more important and popular. we use electricity in various ways: doing house work, entertaining, having important meetings on the internet and so on. imagine this: when watching tv, you find the telephone ranging. so you turned on the light and answer it. it is your cousin who asks about how to use the new soft ware you give him. so you send him an e-mail. all these seems to be too simple and common. but in any of these, electricity is always playing an important role. what if there was no electricity? full of darkness at night, no internet, no televisions……that would be terrible!

so……

thanks to the scientists achievements, we can live such a comfortable life. so when you are doing your homework by the lamp, or watching an nba match or surfing the internet, please say to faraday and the other scientists in your mind sincerely: thank you!

There is no exception to the rule that every organic being naturally increases at so high a rate, that, if not destroyed, the earth would soon be covered by the progeny of a single pair. Even slow-breeding man has doubled in twenty-five years, and at this rate, in less than a thousand years, there would literally not be standing room for his progeny.

The elephant is reckoned the slowest breeder of all known animals, and I have taken some pains to estimate its probable minimum rate of natural increase; it will be safest to assume that it begins breeding when thirty years old, and goes on breeding till ninety years old, bringing forth six young in the interval, and surviving till one hundred years old; if this be so, after a period of from 740 to 750 years there would be nearly nineteen million elephants alive descended from the first pair.

Can we doubt (remembering that many more individuals are born than can possibly survive) that individuals having any advantage, however slight, over others, would have the best chance of surviving and of procreating their kind? On the other hand, we may feel sure that any variation in the least degree injurious would be rigidly destroyed. This preservation of favorable variations and the rejection of injurious variations, I call Natural Selection.
