Today the game reserves(獵物保護區)of East Africa are facing a number of threats. (76)Although they earn considerable revenue(收入) by attracting tourists, they take up land which is increasingly sought by the local people. While these reserves feed and protect animals, they are in danger of turning into barren areas or deserts. Trees, shrubs and grass are gradually being eaten by grazing herds.

Another problem is to be found in the changing attitudes of the animals themselves. Many of them are losing their hereditary(天生)fear of man. In this way they may become a danger to visitors and thus to themselves. Attacks on vehicles are beginning to increase, and it is possible that the problems will become serious in a few years’ time.

The problem of shortage of land is not a simple one. (77) As the population increases, more and more people look hungrily at the land set aside for game reserves. They claim that a Government’s first duty is to its inhabitants and not to tourists or to wild animals. Despite the income obtained from tourism, this is an argument which it is difficult to answer satisfactorily.

(78)Professor Martin’s report says that children who attend a number of different schools, because their parents have to move around the country, probably make slow progress in their studies. There are also signs, says Professor Martin, that an unusually large number of such children are mentally (精神上) affected.

The professor says, "It’s true. My personal feeling is that children should stay in one school. However, our findings are based on research and not on any personal feelings that I or my assistants may have on the subject."

Captain Thomas James, an Army lecturer for the past 20 years and himself a father of two, said, "I’ve never heard such rubbish. Taking me for example, no harm is done to the education of my children who change schools regularly---if they keep to the same system(系統) ,as in our Army schools. In my experience Army children--and I’ve known quite a few of them--are as well - adjusted(善於適應的)as any others, if not more so.
