10年前，聯合國教科文組織把4月23日確定為“世界圖書與版權日(又稱“世界讀書日”)。2005年4月23日是第10個“世界讀書日”。自1995年世界讀書日宣佈以來，每年的.這一天世界上100多個國家和地區在政府的支持下，出版機構、學校、圖書館、社區等各界人士都要開展豐富多彩的閲讀日慶典活動，把讀書日的宣傳活動變成一場熱熱鬧鬧的歡樂節日。

但是，在中國，這個世界性的讀書節還未被社會公眾所知曉，更談不上是節日。據搜狐讀書網站2004年調查顯示：知道“世界讀書日”的人僅佔6%，27%的人雖聽説過但不知詳情，67%的人從未聽説過這個日子。
