伯牙喜歡彈琴，子期有很高的音樂鑑賞能力。伯牙把感情溶進樂曲中去，用琴聲表達了他像高山一樣巍然屹立於天地之間的情操，以及像大海一樣奔騰於宇宙之間的智慧，琴技達到了爐火純青的地步。而鍾子期的情操、智慧正好與他產生了共鳴。不管伯牙如何彈奏，子期都能準確地道出伯牙的心意。伯牙因得知音而大喜，道：“相識滿天下，知音能幾人!”子期死後，伯牙悲痛欲絕，覺得世上再沒有人能如此真切地理解他，“乃破琴絕弦，終身不復鼓。”古人説：“士為知己者死。”伯牙絕弦，所喻示的正是一種真知己的境界，這也正是它千百年來廣為流傳的魅力所在。
春秋時期，有一個人名叫伯牙，隨成連先生學古琴。他掌握了各種演奏技巧，但是老師感到他演奏時，常常是理解不深，單純地把音符奏出來而已，少了點神韻，不能引起欣賞者的共鳴。老師想把他培養成一位真正的藝術家，有一天，成連先生對伯牙説：“我的老師方子春，居住在東海，他能傳授培養人情趣的方法。我帶你前去，讓他給你講講，能夠大大提高你的藝術水平。”於是師徒兩人備了乾糧，駕船出發。到了東海蓬萊山後，成連先生對伯牙説：“你留在這裏練琴，我去尋師-父。”説罷，就搖船漸漸遠離。
過了十天，成連先生還沒回來。伯牙在島上等得心焦，每天調琴之餘，舉目四眺。他面對浩瀚的大海，傾聽澎湃的濤聲。遠望山林，鬱鬱葱葱，深遠莫測，不時傳來羣鳥啁啾飛撲的聲響。這些各有妙趣、音響奇特不一的景象，使他不覺心曠神怡，浮想翩翩，感到自己的情趣高尚了許多。伯牙產生了創作激情，要把自己的感受譜成音樂，於是他架起琴，把滿腔激情傾注到琴絃上，一氣呵成，譜寫了一曲《高山流水》。
沒多久，成連先生搖船而返，聽了他感情真切的演奏，高興地説：“現在你已經是天下最出色的琴師了，你回去吧!”伯牙恍然大悟，原來這濤聲鳥語就是最好的老師。此後，伯牙不斷積累生活和藝術體會，終於成了天下操琴的高手。
