一、work and pleasure

to be really happy and really safe, oneought to have at least two or three hobbies, and they must all be real. it isno use starting late in life to say: “i will take an interest in this or that.”such an attempt only

aggravates the strain of mental effort. a man may acquiregreat knowledge of topics unconnected with his daily work, and yet hardly getany benefit or relief. it is no use doing what you like; you have got to

likewhat you do. broadly speaking, human being may be divided into three classes: thosewho are toiled to death, those who are worried to death, and those who arebored to death. it is no use offering the manual laborer, tired out with a hardweek’s sweat and effort, the chance of playing a game of football or baseballon saturday afternoon. it is no use inviting the politician or the professionalor business man, who has been working or worrying about serious things for sixdays, to work or worry about trifling things at the weekend.

it may also be said that rational, industrious, useful human beings are divided into two classes: first,

thosewhose work is work and whose pleasure is pleasure; and secondly, those whosework and pleasure are one. of these the former are the majority. they havetheir compensations. the long hours in the office or the factory bring withthem as their reward, not only the means of sustenance, but a keen appetite forpleasure even in its simplest and most modest forms. but fortune’s favoredchildren belong to the second class. their life is a natural harmony. for themthe working hours are never long enough. each day is a holiday, and ordinaryholidays when they come are grudged as enforced interruptions in an

absorbingvacation. yet to both classes the need of an alternative outlook, of a changeof atmosphere, of a diversion of effort, is essential. indeed, it may well bethat those whose work is their pleasure are those who most need the means ofbanishing it at intervals from their minds.

二、crazy work

last week i read blogs on the internet, one article touched my heart. it recorded three women in china, who worked overtime to death. no matter how we surprise, we had to admit that their stories were real. nowadays people attach importance to houses and cars, but what is the most important to us? we may say life. yes, without life, there is nothing we can do. of course they also know the importance of life, but they didn’t notice that their lives were going on disappeared. if they had realized their serious consequences they might have quitted office and live an ordinary life with their parents and children. however, most of time we are unwilling to live what we choose at present. we are not driving but driven in such a world.

crazy working reluctantly seems to be normal in today’s society. we often see our friends or colleagues often stay up late to work overtime until 2 or 3 o’clock a.m. we often see them look dreadful because of enormous physical and psychological pressure. now some of us are facing the problem of hunting ideal jobs. some said they would choose to work in first tier cities like beijing or shanghai or guangzhou, and then they would go back to their hometown or some second tier cities. it seems reasonable that we plan to go all out in work for one or two years when we are young. but whether our plan will be carried out smoothly or not depends on our own wisdom. one of my sisters went to an enviable consulting company. several years later she shifted from

high-paying field to administrative services. when asked why, she said it was horrible. her female colleagues were afraid of pregnancy. some pregnant women had to stay up late for piles of work and some even cannot bear children because of poor body conditions. she also found that many families around were not so happy. the reason was very easy, they had no time to stay with their families.

why we have less freedom with more with more and more material abundance? of course we can ignore this problem and live our own life. but in the fast-tempo society people would be like the worker ,acted by comedian chaplin in modern times, who kept turning the screw and everything like screw until he was completely exhausted did he stopped.

when i was a child, my mother often sang chinese classic song of angel matches. so what kind of couples can be called angel matches? the lyrics describe the scene that husband ploughs and wife weaves, husband carries water and wife waters garden. thirty years later, our criteria for his future husband is that he must have car and big house without loans and with an amount of deposit. there

is a great prosperity of material wealth in modern society, which enslaves and prevents people from pursuing their true love. in fact, if we lose our heart home, no matter how big the house is, it cannot give us senses of security and satisfaction.

therefore, in my point of view, we must give up something if we want to increase freedom. because the good things such as dream, passion, love and so on, are the most invaluable in our life. so we should think over what we want and what suits us best. only in this way can we live a happy life.
