中國土地廣闊，人口眾多。儘管全國都講漢語，但是不同地區的人説漢語的'方式不同，這被稱為方言。方言一般被稱為地方話，是漢語在不同地區的分支，只在特定地區使用。漢語方言非常複雜。它們有以下三方面不同：發音、詞彙和語法。發音的區別最為顯著。2000多年前，中國人發現社交時應該使用統一的語言。和方言相比，普通話(mandarin)能被所有人理解。普通話有利於不同種族、地區人民之間的信息傳遞和文化交流。
