　中國四大發明

中國的四大發明包括指南針、火藥、造紙術和印刷術，它們是中國在人類文明史上佔有重要地位的標誌之一。第一個指南針產生於戰國時期(the Warring States Period)，是利用天然磁石(natural magnet)來辨別方向的一種簡單儀器。火藥發明於隋唐時期，主要應用於軍事領域，造紙術於東漢年間由蔡倫改進，使紙成為人們普遍使用的書寫材料。印刷術，又稱活字印刷術，大大促進了文化的傳播。四大發明對世界經濟的發展和人類文化的進步做出了巨大的貢獻。

1.第二句的主幹是“它們是標誌之一”，“標誌(mark)”的定語很長，可用that引導的定語從句來修飾。

2.第三句“第一個指南針…”較長，可拆譯為兩個句子，前一句説明指南針產生的時間，後一句説明指南針的原理。“利用磁石來辨別方位的一種簡單儀器”先譯出主幹“它是一種簡單儀器”，再將長定語處理為現在分詞短語employing……作後置定語。

3.第五句“造紙術於東漢年間…”中的“由蔡倫改進”提示要使用被動語態，“使紙成為人們普遍使用的書寫材料”是造紙術改進的結果，可譯為現在分詞短語making……作結果狀語。

4.末句的主幹為“四大發明做出了巨大貢獻”，注意與contribution搭配的是介詞to，因此to後接名詞短語，説明是對哪方面的貢獻。
