This is the river. The kids preferred to swim in this river.

這是兩個簡單句，但是是完整的句子，所以兩個句子後都加句號。

把這兩個句子合成定語從句，可以是，

1)This is the river that the kids preferred to swim in. that 代替in後面的river。

2)This is the river which the kids preferred to swim in. which代替in後面的river。

3)This is the river the kids preferred to swim in. that和which可以省略，因為連接詞which和that代替的是定語從句裏介詞in的賓語。

4)This is the river in which the kids preferred to swim. in和which放在一起. 在river 的後面，in which the kids preferred to swim 一起修飾the river。

　　(B)

He liked the people. He lived with those people.

這兩句合成定語從句，就是

1)He liked the people that he lived with. that即可以修飾人，也可以修飾物。

2)He liked the people who he lived with.

who可以代替定語從句裏的主語，也可以代替賓語。(賓語有動詞賓語，也有介詞賓語)

3)He liked the people he lived the with.

連接詞可以省略，因為代替的是介詞with的賓語

4)He liked the people whom he lived with.

whom只能代替賓語。

4)He liked the people with whom he lived. 把with 和 whom 連起來，加上he lived,

放在一起修飾the people。

注：. 介詞若是和連接詞放在一起的定語從句，只能是修飾物用which，修飾人用whom。不能用that，who這兩個連接詞。也不能省略。

定語從句與主句間可以加逗號。
